The town of Darbyville was established by John Darby, a former Confederate Army member who owned much of the land in Baker County. When another former Confederate, Carr Bowers McClenny, married Darby’s daughter Ada, his industrious nature and philanthropic efforts later led to the community being renamed McClenny. However, that name had to later be changed for Macclenny because of a post office rule against capital letters in the middle of a name.
Today Macclenny sits at the intersection of many major roads in Baker County. U.S. Route 90 intersects with Florida State Road 121 and Florida State Road 228 in the middle of the city while Interstate 10 crosses through the southern limits.
